Like A Shadow:
The Life and Training of a Guardian Warrior

Tamarack Song
Some call him Scout, many would call him Warrior, and still others know him as Protector. To Native people he is Guardian. He is the manifestation of their courage, selflessness, and desire to serve. The Guardian can be female or male, old or young. He is invisible, alert, and detached. He is sentry, wayfinder, messenger, ambassador, sleuth, defender, provider, brother, and sister. His presence gives peace of mind to his people so that they can comfortably pursue their day’s activities and rest peacefully at night. In this day, the Guardian is needed again by his people, perhaps like never before. This book guides you to where he can be found within yourself. You may be surprised to discover how close he lives to your heart. All people need protection--from the weather, a natural disaster, or sometimes perhaps from an “enemy,” other times from the burdens of clan and family, and occasionally even from ourselves. The Guardian is trained to serve as a protector in all of these ways.Perhaps most importantly, the Guardian protects her people's state of well-being, by helping to assure a low level of stress and a high level of personal satisfaction in life. She fills in when parents need a helping hand. She protects and defends someone who is being persecuted or falsely accused. She stands up for the exploited and disadvantaged. She protects people from their own folly, from their shortsightedness and errors of judgment. Functioning from a place of greater perspective, she is able to foresee what peril looms ahead. When a Guardian meets conflict on her mission, her high degree of training in methods of camouflage, avoidance, and deception allows her to minimize her impact upon others. She has a highly attuned spiritual sense; she understands that the Lifeforce in others is the same substance that flows through her, so she grants those who stand in her Path the utmost respect and space. If there is no other way to navigate around them, she removes them in the least disruptive and harmful way possible. When she has no choice but to fight, the Guardian does not fight against anything or anyone; she fights for Balance, connection, and respect for all creatures on Earth. This book is a complete Guardian training manual, giving you the awarenesses, diet, and exercises to bring out your fullest performance potential. First, you meet the traditional Guardian; then, you find the Guardian within you. You discover how you can serve your people and your mother planet with the same sense of purpose and service as the Guardians of old. And just as importantly, you gain the deep sense of fulfillment that comes from performing at your creative, physical, intellectual, and intuitive peak.
My Thoughts
Throughout my process of doing "the work" and in particular Men's work, there is always a common theme around being a "Warrior". This book sheds a completely new light on that philosophy or archetype if you like. The idea of being a Guardian for me is much deeper and runs truer to what we need more of in men and women in today's society. The training techniques and ideas outlined in this book are easily immersed into your everyday life even if you live in the world of suburbia. Things like using your opposite hand to do normal day to day activities, taking a different route to work or just the shops, getting used to easily navigating around obstacles and training your body based on activities that enable you to remain nimble and silent. Having read this book, I would much prefer to have Guardians by my side than warriors. Warriors are often driven off emotion whereas Guardians are driven from their "Heart of Hearts" with the goal of being effective from the shadows and knowing when to complete or abort a mission with minimal impact to their families and the earth in general. This was a captivating book and one that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

The Emotion Code

Dr. Bradley Nelson
In this newly revised and expanded edition of The Emotion Code, renowned holistic physician and lecturer Dr. Bradley Nelson skillfully lays bare the inner workings of the subconscious mind. He reveals how emotionally-charged events from your past can still be haunting you in the form of trapped emotions--emotional energies that literally inhabit your body. These trapped emotions can fester in your life and body, creating pain, malfunction, and eventual disease. They can also extract a heavy mental and emotional toll on you, impacting how you think, the choices that you make, and the level of success and abundance you are able to achieve. Perhaps most damaging of all, trapped emotional energies can gather around your heart, cutting off your ability to give and receive love.
The Emotion Code is a powerful and simple way to rid yourself of this unseen baggage. Dr. Nelson's method gives you the tools to identify and release the trapped emotions in your life, eliminating your "emotional baggage," and opening your heart and body to the positive energies of the world. Filled with real-world examples from many years of clinical practice, The Emotion Code is a distinct and authoritative work that has become a classic on self-healing.

My Thoughts
As I continue to expand my understanding of energy and consciousness as well as how stored emotions affect our physical and emotional states along with having an acceptance of modalities such as Kinesiology and Reiki, the timing of reading this book could not have been better. The great thing about this book is it contains both theory and practical information which means post reading you can use the techniques and charts provided to apply what you have just learned on yourself and then as you see the results, use them on loved ones.
I have slowly been surrendering to the fact that I believe I have the ability to energetically heal people and now that I have read this book and have the knowledge and tools I am super excited to see where this will lead. I may even look to become certified as a practitioner in either this or Kinesiology as a result. There are things  that conceptually I align and understand with very quickly and this was one of them. For anyone who is in the healing space or looking to expand their knowledge on how energy works, then definitely grab this book.

Be Here Now

Ram Dass
"We're talking about metamorphosis
We're talking about going from a caterpillar to a butterfly
We're talking about how to become a butterfly."
Be Here Now is a vehicle for sharing the true message, and a guide to self-determination.
Beloved guru Ram Dass tells the story of his spiritual awakening and gives you the tools to take control of your life in this "counterculture bible" (The New York Times) featuring powerful guidance on yoga, meditation, and finding your true self.
When Be Here Now was first published in 1971, it filled a deep spiritual emptiness, launched the ongoing mindfulness revolution, and established Ram Dass as perhaps the preeminent seeker of the twentieth century.
Just ten years earlier, he was known as Professor Richard Alpert. He held appointments in four departments at Harvard University. He published books, drove a Mercedes and regularly vacationed in the Caribbean. By most societal standards, he had achieved great success. . . . And yet he couldn't escape the feeling that something was missing.
Psilocybin and LSD changed that. During a period of experimentation, Alpert peeled away each layer of his identity, disassociating from himself as a professor, a social cosmopolite, and lastly, as a physical being. Fear turned into exaltation upon the realization that at his truest, he was just his inner-self- a luminous being that he could trust indefinitely and love infinitely.
And thus, a spiritual journey commenced. Alpert headed to India where his guru renamed him Baba Ram Dass-"servant of God." He was introduced to mindful breathing exercises, hatha yoga, and Eastern philosophy. If he found himself reminiscing or planning, he was reminded to"Be Here Now."He started upon the path of enlightenment, and has been journeying along it ever since.
Be Here Nowis a vehicle for sharing the true message, and a guide to self-determination.
My Thoughts
So, this is one of the strangest yet intriguing books that I have ever read. It has an amazing combination between telling the story of Ram Dass and techniques you can use to go on your  "Sadhana"  journey (The Cook Book) and an illustrative description of what the journey actually looks like. The first and last parts of the book are read like any other book however, you do need to be open to the concept of enlightenment and loss of ego to truly appreciate the teachings that are laid out. The middle section of the book is this fascinating pictorial journey that at times requires complete focus and concentration. The words at time are lost in the graphics or spine and working out which way to read (across the page, down the page, around the page etc) requires you to be fully present so that you can take it all in.
What this book does do though is question every conditioning and attachment that you have to both reading, how a book should be laid out and how to consume the myriad of information that is contained within.
The most
beautiful and simplistic message that is within the book and sits directly in the title is this: Be Here Now. These 3 simple words when answered by the 2 questions: Where am I and What time is it (Here & Now) are the key to living life in the present knowing that the past cannot be changed and the future is yet to exist. And when the future does arrive, it is Here Now, so just be Here Now.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is seeking the answer to the questions: Who am I, Where am I, What time is it? I'll leave it up to you to find the answers.

Ikigai: The Japanese Secret to a Long and Happy Life

Hector Garcia & Francesc Miralles
We all have an ikigai.
It's the Japanese word for 'a reason to live' or 'a reason to jump out of bed in the morning'.
It's the place where your needs, desires, ambitions, and satisfaction meet. A place of balance. Small wonder that finding your ikigai is closely linked to living longer.
Finding your ikigai is easier than you might think. This book will help you work out what your own ikigai really is, and equip you to change your life. You have a purpose in this world- your skills, your interests, your desires and your history have made you the perfect candidate for something. All you have to do is find it.
Do that, and you can make every single day of your life joyful and meaningful.
Picture
My Thoughts
I am now in a position where I am open to all and every signal that the universe is sending my way. After being informed that my services were no longer required due to my personal medical choices and not my performance, I have completely surrendered to the fact that the universe has a specific purpose for me and through tuning into the signals that are being sent my way, I will start to live my truest life. Then I walk into a book shop and on the shelf is this book.
In simple terms, this book is all about longevity through doing the things that bring you most joy and allow you to live in a state of constant flow. Once you find your "Ikigai" then you have found your purpose and can live a long, happy life full of ease and flow. This is exactly where I am now. Looking for my Ikigai.
Outside of the simple model that is presented on the back cover of the book in where your Ikigai lies, it is also fascinating as to the stories and information that is provided by the Japanese who live in Okinawa that is known for having one of the highest number of Centenarians and Super-centenarians on the planet. I'm please to see that I have started to take on a number of the traits that help each of us live a long, fulfilled life. This is also a very quick and easy read so I would definitely head out and purchase it.

Will

Will Smith and Mark Manson
One of the most dynamic and globally recognized entertainment forces of our time opens up fully about his life, in a brave and inspiring book that traces his learning curve to a place where outer success, inner happiness, and human connection are aligned. Along the way, Will tells the story in full of one of the most amazing rides through the worlds of music and film that anyone has ever had.
Will Smith's transformation from a fearful child in a tense West Philadelphia home to one of the biggest rap stars of his era and then one of the biggest movie stars in Hollywood history, with a string of box office successes that will likely never be broken, is an epic tale of inner transformation and outer triumph, and Will tells it astonishingly well. But it's only half the story.
Will Smith thought, with good reason, that he had won at life- not only was his own success unparalleled, his whole family was at the pinnacle of the entertainment world. Only they didn't see it that way- they felt more like star performers in his circus, a seven-days-a-week job they hadn't signed up for. It turned out Will Smith's education wasn't nearly over.
This memoir is the product of a profound journey of self-knowledge, a reckoning with all that your will can get you and all that it can leave behind. Written with the help of Mark Manson, author of the multi-million-copy bestseller The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, Will is the story of how one exceptional man mastered his own emotions, written in a way that can help everyone else do the same. Few of us will know the pressure of performing on the world's biggest stages for the highest of stakes, but we can all understand that the fuel that works for one stage of our journey might have to be changed if we want to make it all the way home. The combination of genuine wisdom of universal value and a life story that is preposterously entertaining, even astonishing, puts Will the book, like its author, in a category by itself.
My Thoughts
This is another of the books that I listened to as opposed to read. Again, as the author was the narrator it added the extra emotions that you would not get when reading the book yourself. Normally, I would not be attracted to reading a book by a "Star" however, as I have followed the journey of Will Smith and his wife Jada with a particular interest in how they have become more focussed on producing conscious content. I was therefore interested in hearing Will's recollection of his story and how he went from what could be seen as an egotistical super star to a conscious man. Given that I interview many men who go on similar journeys, this created an intrigue as to how he transformed.
The key telling point for me was when he relayed the story of how his daughter suggested that Will had a picture of his family in his mind however, it was not the family that he was living with. This sent Will on a journey of complete discovery which has landed him where he is today. This book will have you in laughter at one point, frustration at another, then in amazement and then in tears. I would definitely recommend this book in audio as you can also here the varying emotions coming through in Wills voice. Also, it is a very simple reminder that we are all just human trying to live the best lives that we can and that there is no difference if you make millions or just cents.

Country: Future Fire, Future Farming

Bill Gammage & Bruce Pascoe
What do you need to know to prosper as a people for at least 65,000 years? The First Knowledges series provides a deeper understanding of the expertise and ingenuity of Indigenous Australians.
For millennia, Indigenous Australians harvested this continent in ways that can offer contemporary environmental and economic solutions.
Bill Gammage and Bruce Pascoe demonstrate how Aboriginal people cultivated the land through manipulation of water flows, vegetation and firestick practice. Not solely hunters and gatherers, the First Australians also farmed and stored food. They employed complex seasonal fire programs that protected Country and animals alike. In doing so, they avoided the killer fires that we fear today.
Country: Future Fire, Future Farming highlights the consequences of ignoring this deep history and living in unsustainable ways. It details the remarkable agricultural and land-care techniques of First Nations peoples and shows how such practices are needed now more than ever.
Picture
My Thoughts
This was the third in the First Knowledge series and like the previous 2 books, this is also a great educational book on what life was like pre colonisation in 1788. It's sad to see what is happening to the Australian landscape without the implementation of the tools and techniques used 250+ years ago to ensure the land was maintained correctly. One of the most interesting aspects for me was when a "mob" did not see smoke they started to worry as that meant something was wrong with a neighbouring mob.
We now unfortunately are caught up in political bureaucracy and egotistic leaders of fire services who refuse to engage the local indigenous to understand how to truly look after the land. We have also lost the art of growing and cultivating crops that are made to grow in Australian conditions and are hell bent on pursuing a Northern Hemisphere, European driven way of attempting to farm both crops and animals when we already have an abundance of natural crops and animals that would more than feed our society.
As per the previous books, this is another must read. Go in with an open mind and an open heart and you will soon realise how corrupt, ignorant and arrogant we have become when it comes to ignoring the amazing knowledge that has been handed down over 10's of thousands of years to the true ancestors and owners of this land.

True Path

Paul Colquhuon
Have you ever wondered if there's a bigger purpose for you, a more meaningful journey, that keeps playing in the back of your mind, but you can't quite put your finger on it?  You're stuck in the jungle of life, unable to see your yellow brick road. You know it's there, but it's just not clear, as life here on Earth as we've created it just gets in the way, preoccupying us to lose sight of our passions, or doubt ourselves from ever following that path, your true path.
Well, .....my name is Paul Colquhoun, and i'm not saying i've got all the answers, but like most of us i've been through enough crap and life experiences to question .....what's it all for, is there more to life?
So here's my thoughts, purely so you may find one or two seeds of info that gives your journey some further purpose, ......like the flap of a butterfly wing, who knows what the effect will be, where it will take you or what's waiting out there for you. I hope you enjoy the read, cheers, Paul.
My Thoughts
I had the opportunity to meet the author at a recent Men's Gathering where he was one of the key men who were providing guidance and assistance to the men in attendance. From the outset, there was something different, something unique about Paul in a very good way. It was clear that he had been on a journey however, through that journey had an awakening experience that enabled him to reach into his soul and his heart and learn to live from that space.
This book is unique in many ways. The font, the style of writing, the openness, the honesty and the willingness to just put into words what was sitting deep in his soul and his heart. And then he just leaves it up to you. As he states, this is his views, his thoughts, his wisdom and then it is up to us to take from it what we will. What I have taken from it is the inspiration and courage to follow in his footsteps and do something similar (more of this at a later stage) and move beyond my stories and limiting beliefs and just be me.
This is a very simple book (which is to be seen in a very positive light) which can be read at ease and truly reflects Paul. In having had many conversations with Paul and reading this book, I felt like the conversations were ongoing from out last encounter and I could easily hear his voice as I read through each chapter.  This is definitely value for money and another book to add to the collection.

The Surrender Experiment

Michael A. Singer
Michael A. Singer, author of THE UNTETHERED SOUL, tells the extraordinary story of what happened when, after a deep spiritual awakening, he decided to let go of his personal preferences and simply let life call the shots. As Singer takes you on this great experiment and journey into life's perfection, the events that transpire will both challenge your deepest assumptions about life and inspire you to look at your own life in a radically different way.
Spirituality is meant to bring about harmony and peace. But the diversity of our philosophies, beliefs, concepts, and views about the soul often leads to confusion. To reconcile the noise that clouds spirituality, Michael Singer combines accounts of his own life journey to enlightenment - from his years as a hippie-loner to his success as a computer program engineer to his work in spiritual and humanitarian efforts - with lessons on how to put aside conflicting beliefs, let go of worries, and transform misdirected desires. Singer provides a road map to a new way of living not in the moment, but to exist in a state of perpetual happiness.
Picture
My Thoughts
Of the back of completing the Initiation to Self program run by Innerpreneur Sam Lewis, my reading of the Untethered Soul, Power vs Force and The Map of Consciousness Explained (refer below), the reading of this book was perfectly timed. This is where I am at now and am in the process of applying the principles as outlined in this beautifully written story.
This is the perfect illustration that when we get out of our own way, treat all interactions with enquiry and surrender and make intuition based decisions that our life will unfold in front of us with ease. Yes, there are challenges along the way, yes our ego can feel insulted, yes we will be triggered however, by putting all that aside (which in reality is all ego) then we can allow life to flow naturally through us and in front of and lead us onto the journey that ultimately has been laid out for us.
Post reading this book and reflecting back on my own life, I can now see how few decisions I really made and where I naturally followed this approach which has resulted in me landing where I am today. From a macro level, my life has been one of abundance and "success"; from a micro level there has been a lot of unnecessary resistance, attachment and angst. None of which added any value or even made any difference.
Similar to my thoughts on the Map Of Consciousness Explained and Power vs Force, the reading of this book and the value you take from it will come down to where you are in your own "surrender & acceptance" journey.

Greenlights

Matthew McConaughey
From the Academy Award -winning actor, an unconventional memoir filled with raucous stories, outlaw wisdom, and lessons learned the hard way about living with greater satisfaction.
I've been in this life for fifty years, been trying to work out its riddle for forty-two, and been keeping diaries of clues to that riddle for the last thirty-five. Notes about successes and failures, joys and sorrows, things that made me marvel, and things that made me laugh out loud. How to be fair. How to have less stress. How to have fun. How to hurt people less. How to get hurt less. How to be a good man. How to have meaning in life. How to be more me.
Recently, I worked up the courage to sit down with those diaries. I found stories I experienced, lessons I learned and forgot, poems, prayers, prescriptions, beliefs about what matters, some great photographs, and a whole bunch of bumper stickers. I found a reliable theme, an approach to living that gave me more satisfaction, at the time, and still: If you know how, and when, to deal with life's challenges - how to get relative with the inevitable - you can enjoy a state of success I call 'catching greenlights.'
So I took a one-way ticket to the desert and wrote this book: an album, a record, a story of my life so far. This is fifty years of my sights and seens, felts and figured-outs, cools and shamefuls. Graces, truths, and beauties of brutality. Getting away withs, getting caughts, and getting wets while trying to dance between the raindrops.
Hopefully, it's medicine that tastes good, a couple of aspirin instead of the infirmary, a spaceship to Mars without needing your pilot's license, going to church without having to be born again, and laughing through the tears.
It's a love letter. To life.
It's also a guide to catching more greenlights-and to realising that the yellows and reds eventually turn green too.
Good luck.
My Thoughts
I have now found a newfound enjoyment of listening to audio books and in particular where the book is narrated by the author. In relation to Greenlights, I felt that I had a much enhanced experience by listening to Matthew narrating his own story in his beautiful American Southern accent. He beautifully accented the varying elements within the book bringing all the key points to life.
Overall, the concept of hitting "Green Lights" along life's journey is both enlightening and thought provoking. In essence, if we just go with the flow, then it's amazing how many "Green Lights" we get along the way and in the event we do hit a "Red Light", then using this as an opportunity to stop and reflect will enable us to turn it into a "Green Light" opportunity.
I have not read this book and therefore, cannot comment from that perspective however, as above given the beautiful use of language and intonation by Matthew throughout the Audio book this  added so much more context and entertainment. I do feel I would not have received the same level of engagement and connection if I did not listen and just read the book.
Matthew also has a very enlightened view of life and did so from a very young age. This is refreshing to hear given what we often perceive "stars" to be shallow from a consciousness perspective (this is definitely a judgement that should be tested in all instances).
My recommendation is to get this book, read it if you feel called however, to definitely listen to the audio version as it was hugely engaging.

The Map of Consciousness Explained

David R. Hawkins M.D., Ph.D.
The Map of Consciousness Explained is an essential primer on the late Dr. David R. Hawkins's teachings on human consciousness and their associated energy fields.
Using muscle testing, Dr. Hawkins conducted more than 250,000 calibrations during 20 years of research to define a range of values, attitudes, and emotions that correspond to levels of consciousness. This range of values-along with a logarithmic scale of 1 to 1,000-became the Map of Consciousness, which Dr. Hawkins first wrote about in his New York Times bestseller, Power vs. Force.
In this book, readers will gain an introduction and deeper understanding of the Map, with visual charts and practical applications to help them heal, recover, and evolve to higher levels of consciousness and energy.
Picture
My Thoughts
This was the perfect follow up to the Power vs Force book referred to below. This book achieves exactly what it sets out to do. Provide an explanation of how consciousness works and what we can do to tap into the universal consciousness to enable us to live what I would call "above the line". That is, to operate from a level of consciousness above 200.
Given where I am on my current journey of releasing my ego and learning how to be more aligned to the universal consciousness and direction that I am meant to follow, then this enabled me to be more at ease with where I am at. Now, this book is not for everyone and your alignment will be fully dependent on your openness and willingness to accept that there is a greater energy and vibrational element out there that we are able to tap into and accept.
For anyone that is on a path of surrender and moving toward a deeper connection to the universal energy and consciousness that exists, then this is the book for you.
It is also an easy ready, even though it appears to be daunting on the surface. Like most of the books in this list, it is one that I would also recommend if you are willing to let go of your ego and just tap into the wider conscious energy source.

Power v Force

David R. Hawkins M.D., Ph.D.
This is a fascinating work that will intrigue readers from all walks of life!
David R. Hawkins details how anyone may resolve the most crucial of all human dilemmas- how to instantly determine the truth or falsehood of any statement or supposed fact. Dr. Hawkins, who worked as a 'healing psychiatrist' during his long and distinguished career, uses theoretical concepts from particle physics, nonlinear dynamics, and chaos theory to support his study of human behavior. This is a fascinating work that will intrigue readers from all walks of life!
Man thinks he lives by virtue of the forces he can control, but in fact, he's governed by power from unrevealed sources, power over which he has no control.
Imagine - what if you had access to a simple yes-or-no answer to any question you wished to ask? A demonstrably true answer. Any question . . . think about it - from the Foreword
We think we live by forces we control, but in fact we are governed by power from unrevealed sources, power over which we have no control. - from the author's Preface
The universe holds its breath as we choose, instant by instant, which pathway to follow; for the universe, the very essence of life itself, is highly conscious. Every act, thought, and choice adds to a permanent mosaic; our decisions ripple through the universe of consciousness to affect the lives of all.- from Power vs. Force
My Thoughts
Over the past few years I have heard many coaches, spiritual leaders and authors talk about consciousness and how to tap into the universe to receive true abundance. I also became aware of the Map of Consciousness however, up until now I was unable to completely grasp the concepts (or should I say, surrender to the concepts) that they were eluding to. This even runs true to the meditation courses that I have completed. Even though I am more open minded and have a meditation practice, there is still a big part of me that is a logical thinker who needs to understand the underlying principles. This book was that for me. There were numerous AHA moments throughout this book. Given the current global challenges, viewpoints and overriding sentiment, this book has helped me solidify my practice of being open minded, open hearted, compassionate and coming from a place of love.
This book is also powerful in that it in itself is written from a high level of consciousness (>700) which allows any reader that is operating from a high attractor field to align to the teachings and feel comfort.
For anyone who is struggling with their "spiritual practice", who is looking for a tool to move to a higher level of consciousness or to just gain a deeper understanding of how the concept of "one universal consciousness" operates then this is the book for you.
To put it simply, you get back what you put out. Put out a high level of consciousness then you will link into a higher attractor field (positive) and that level of consciousness will come back. Live from a low level of consciousness (negative) then that will come back to you. I know which I choose to align with.

tell me why

Archie Roach
A powerful memoir of a true Australian legend: stolen child, musical and lyrical genius, and leader.
Not many have lived as many lives as Archie Roach – stolen child, seeker, teenage alcoholic, lover, father, musical and lyrical genius, and leader – but it took him almost a lifetime to find out who he really was.
Roach was only two years old when he was forcibly removed from his family. Brought up by a series of foster parents until his early teens, his world imploded when he received a letter that spoke of a life he had no memory of.
In this intimate, moving and often shocking memoir, Archie’s story is an extraordinary odyssey through love and heartbreak, family and community, survival and renewal – and the healing power of music. Overcoming enormous odds to find his story and his people, Archie voices the joy, pain and hope he found on his path through song to become the legendary singer-songwriter and storyteller that he is today – beloved by fans worldwide.
Tell Me Why is a stunning account of resilience and the strength of spirit – and of a great love story.
Picture
My Thoughts
Similar to the story of Jack Charles, I listened to this as an audio book in between reading the books both above and below.
Like the Jack Charles story, I felt this story had more impact as it was narrated by Archie  himself who also added in snippets of songs and chords along the way. The themes in Archies book run very similar to those of Jack Charles whereby the impact of being taken away from his biological parents had a large impact on Archie's life. Having said that, there is always an ironic view in that we may not have been able to experience his musical brilliance and true leadership if it was not for the trauma that he endured. Now before you jump on me for that statement, let me be very clear. There is no excuse for the atrocities that took place in Australia when it comes to the historical and ongoing mistreatment of the Aboriginal people and the decimation of their mobs.
Archie takes us on a beautiful yet heart breaking journey of his life. A journey that he tells with majestic poetry. You can hear the hurt in his voice yet this is balanced by the love he has for his family, his mob and his music.
For anyone who is looking to learn about the challenges that have been faced however to also hear how one man has been able to lift himself above that and have an influence on Australian music and culture then this is a must read/listen.

Born Again Blakfella

Jack Charles with Namila Benson
Jack Charles has worn many hats throughout his life - actor, cat burglar, musician, heroin addict, activist. even Senior Victorian Australian of the Year. But the title he's most proud to claim is that of Aboriginal Elder.
Stolen from his mother and placed into institutional care when he was only a few months old, Uncle Jack was raised under the government's White Australia Policy. The loneliness and isolation he experienced during those years had a devastating impact on him that endured long after he reconnected with his Aboriginal roots and discovered his stolen identity. Even today he feels like an outsider; a loner; a fringe dweller.

In this honest and no-holds-barred memoir, Uncle Jack reveals the 'ups and downs of this crazy, drugged up, locked up, fucked up, and at times unbelievable, life'. From his sideline as a cat burglar, battles with drug addiction and stints in prison, to gracing the nation's stages and screens as he dazzled audiences with his big personality and acting prowess, he takes us through the most formative moments of his life.
By turns heartbreaking and hilarious, Jack Charles- Born-again Blakfella is a candid and uplifting memoir from one of Australia's finest and most beloved actors.
My Thoughts
To be open and transparent, I listened to this as an audio book in between reading the books below. This however did not detract from my experience and in fact I felt it enhanced the experience. Why? This book was narrated by Jack himself which added that extra authenticity, charm and character. This is a story of both heart break and triumph. Heart break as you learn directly from someone who was from the Stolen Generation and the impact that being removed from his family and culture had on his life. After listening to this, it's so easy to see why so many of our Indigenous Australians are lost and are now living lives on the streets and using escapism methods such as drugs and alcohol. The heart warming part is how Jack survived, his resilience, his ability to maintain a sense of humour and his connection back to his culture, his people, his tribe and his Country.
I have mentioned a number of books below in relation to the Australian Aboriginal history and this is another one that needs to be added to that list of must reads/listens. Thanks Jack, you truly deserve to be an Elder and wear the title of Uncle.

My Thoughts
As I have started to venture further into the realms of understanding the difference between my true Self and my ego self, this book came along at the right time. Even though it has been out for a number of years, I feel you need to be ready and on your own pathway for this to make full sense. For me, I was able to relate to each and every chapter and have become any further aware of the role that my ego is playing every single day in either reflecting on the past or projecting into the future.
This was a beautiful reminder of the need to stay in the present and to operate with full presence. Even simple things like walking to the fridge for food or drink. Being present is about how you walk there, not why you are going or what will happen when you arrive. The reading of this book has also led to a deeper understanding of my meditation practice. Again, another must read for all those folks who are starting to become more aware that there is more to life than what our ego leads us to believe.

The Spirit of Intimacy

Sobonfu Some
A renowned, respected teacher and mentor to thousands, Sobonfu Somi is one of the first and foremost voices of African spirituality to come to the West.
Somi was born in Dano, Burkina Faso, a remote West African village with a population of about two hundred people. Dano has preserved the old ways of African village life, with family structures, spiritual practices, and methods of living that have been in place for more than ten thousand years. In The Spirit of Intimacy, Somi distills the ancient teachings and wisdom of her native village to give insight into the nature of intimate relationships.
Somi generously applies the subtle knowledge from her West African culture to this one. Simply and beautifully, she reveals the role of spirit in every marriage, friendship, relationship, and community. She shares ancient ways to make our intimate lives more fulfilling and secure and offers powerful insights into the illusion of romance, divorce, and loss. Her important and fascinating lessons from the heart include the sacred meaning of pleasure, preparing a ritual space for intimacy, and the connection between sex and spirituality. Her ideas are intuitively persuasive, provocative, and healing--and supported by sound practical advice, along with specific rituals and ceremonies based on those used for thousands of years.
With this book, the spiritual insights of indigenous Africa take their place alongside those of native America, ancient Europe, and Asia as important influences on Western readers.
My Thoughts
WOW!!!
Talk about a game changer when it comes to learning how conditioned and isolated we have become in the western world. This book is a must read for all couples and everyone who is yearning to be a part of a true community. And trust me, we all yearn for it whether we like to admit it or not. The openness in which the members of this community live, the way they have a deep connection to spirit and place the community over and above the individual is refreshing. Now this is not how the current egoistic westerners view community and how they purport to be doing things for the betterment of the community, this is true spirit connectivity that binds all the community members together.
We have so much to learn from the beautiful indigenous cultures across the world and need to find a way to move back to simplistic, spirit driven loves and not the fast, materialistic, shallow lives that we are currently consumed by.
So, in summary please purchase this book as it has now hit my top 3 without a doubt.

The Three Pillars of Zen

Exploring the three pillars of Zen-teaching, practice, and enlightenment-Roshi Philip Kapleau, the man who founded one of the oldest and most influential Zen centers in the United States, presents a personal account of his own experiences as a student and teacher, and in so doing gives readers invaluable advice on how to develop their own practices. Revised and updated, this 35th anniversary edition features new illustrations and photographs, as well as a new afterword by Sensei Bodhin Kjolhede, who succeeded Kapleau as spiritual director of the Rochester Zen Center. A moving, eye-opening work, The Three Pillars of Zen is the definitive introduction to the history and discipline of Zen.

My Thoughts
This book was very timely as it reinvigorated my meditation practice. As it describes, it takes what can be a complicate subject being Zen Buddhism and makes it simple and easy for a westerner to understand. Having gone through a couple of meditation programs based on Indian philosophies it was amazing to see how closely aligned they are and how they both effectively originated 1,000's of years ago. There are similarities between my practice and that of the Zen meditation practices which was very heartening. Ultimately the same objective exist for both: To achieve enlightenment. So what is enlightenment, in my simplest view it is the ability to become one with everything, live without duality and judgement and learn to just be. What a beautiful objective to strive for.
Now, this is a reasonably heavy book with a lot of reference to Japanese terminology however, having said that as it also focusses on the stories of those who have used the practices outlined in the book it does leave you knowing one thing: Anyone can achieve enlightenment with the right level of focus, mental strength and guidance.
If meditation is your thing, then this is a book that you have to read.

Design: Building on Country

Alison Page & Paul Memmott
Aboriginal design is of a distinctly cultural nature, based in the Dreaming and in ancient practices grounded in Country. It is visible in the aerodynamic boomerang, the ingenious design of fish traps and the precise layouts of community settlements that strengthen social cohesion.
Alison Page and Paul Memmott show how these design principles of sophisticated function, sustainability and storytelling, refined over many millennia, are now being applied to contemporary practices. Design: Building on Country
issues a challenge for a new Australian design ethos, one that truly responds to the essence of Country and its people.
My Thoughts
This is the second in the First Knowledge series of books and I loved it as much as the first: Songlines.
It was another reminder of how ignorant I am when it comes to indigenous knowledge around design of
shelter, land use, tools, social structures and use of the natural environment.
This was an extraordinary insight into simple things like temporary shelter design versus long term design, use of wind barriers, sleeping techniques and directions to ward off bad spirits and negative energy through to making our westernised architecture more indigenous friendly and conducive to use. As below, this is another must read by all non-indigenous and even those indigenous people who may have lost their way.

The Untethered Soul

Michael A Singer
Who are you?
In this remarkable book, author and spiritual guide Michael Singer explores this fundamental question, seeking the very root of consciousness in order to help readers learn how to dwell in the present moment. Written in an engaging and uncomplicated voice, this book will open readers up to the radical and powerful experience of simply being themselves.
Picture
My Thoughts
Having come off the back of a meditation course by a close friend Sam Lewis called "Initiation Back to Self", the timing of reading this book was perfect.
In its simplicity, this book asks us to think about who is the witness to our thoughts, behaviours, reactions, emotions and belief system.  It then questions what are we holding onto and why.
The easiest analogy for me to put here is this: "Why paddle against the current, when you can just surrender and go with the flow?". This book asks us not to just question however, to be the observer of all the resistances that we are fighting each and every day and work out why we have created so many energetic blockages that cause us pain, grief and unhappiness. By learning to let them all go, we can then live a life free of resistance and seek a life of pure joy and inner happiness.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading The Surrender Experiment.

The Biggest Estate on Earth

How Aborigines Made Australia

Bill Gammage
Explodes the myth that pre-settlement Australia was an untamed wilderness revealing the complex, country-wide systems of land management used by Aboriginal people.
Across Australia, early Europeans commented again and again that the land looked like a park. With extensive grassy patches and pathways, open woodlands and abundant wildlife, it evoked a country estate in England. Bill Gammage has discovered this was because Aboriginal people managed the land in a far more systematic and scientific fashion than we have ever realised.
For over a decade, Gammage has examined written and visual records of the Australian landscape. He has uncovered an extraordinarily complex system of land management using fire and the life cycles of native plants to ensure plentiful wildlife and plant foods throughout the year. We know Aboriginal people spent far less time and effort than Europeans in securing food and shelter, and now we know how they did it.
With details of land-management strategies from around Australia, The Biggest Estate on Earthrewrites the history of this continent, with huge implications for us today. Once Aboriginal people were no longer able to tend their country, it became overgrown and vulnerable to the hugely damaging bushfires we now experience. And what we think of as virgin bush in a national park is nothing of the kind.
My Thoughts
I purchased this book as it was one of the main reference points used for Dark Emu and was also referred to in Songlines. This is a very detailed book with constant references to comments and literature written by the early settlers on what they discovered about the land and the land management when they first explored Australia. This book also clearly busts the myths about the "lack of land management" and that the original land custodians were "Hunter Gatherers".
Personally, I found this book hard to navigate through and is not my personal style given it's more of a reference/academia style book. I am very glad that I have purchased it and added it to my library as I will definitely use it as a required as a go to reference book when I am personally making arguments for the destruction and misuse of the land by the post invasion colonists (of which I am one).

Dark Emu

Bruce Pascoe
Dark Emu puts forward an argument for a reconsideration of the hunter-gatherer tag for pre-colonial Aboriginal Australians. The evidence insists that Aboriginal people right across the continent were using domesticated plants, sowing, harvesting, irrigating, and storing ― behaviours inconsistent with the hunter-gatherer tag. Gerritsen and Gammage in their latest books support this premise but Pascoe takes this further and challenges the hunter-gatherer tag as a convenient lie. Almost all the evidence in Dark Emu comes from the records and diaries of the Australian explorers, impeccable sources.
Bruce's comments on his book compared to Gammage's: 'My book is about food production, housing construction and clothing, whereas Gammage was interested in the appearance of the country at contact. [Gammage] doesn't contest hunter gatherer labels either, whereas that is at the centre of my argument.'
Picture
My Thoughts
Having read Songlines, this was the next must read book on my journey of discovery. Having read this, I do not understand why this is not standard literature in all schools across Australia. This book completely challenged what I was taught in school and what I have been told about the lives of the land custodians prior to the invasion in 1788.
This book clearly outlines the convenient mistruth that has been told by the white colonists (invaders) to continue to justify the atrocities that have taken place over hundreds of years, and easily arguably are still ongoing today. This book based on actual statements made by the early settlers (invaders) clearly shows they encountered a very sophisticated, intelligent and well structured community of people's who effectively managed agriculture and aquaculture like nothing seen before. Based on accounts in this book and The Greatest Estate on Earth, in just under 250 years, white settlers have managed to completely destroy a pristine, well kept land out of nothing more than pure ignorance, wealth and greed.
I recommend that this book be read with an open mind and an open heart so that we can understand that it is now about us and them, it's about enabling "us" to listen to, learn from and understand how we should be managing this "Country" from the true custodians.

Songlines

The Power and Promise

Margo Neale & Lynne Kelly
Songlines are an archive for powerful knowledges that ensured Australia's many Indigenous cultures flourished for over 60,000 years. Much more than a navigational path in the cartographic sense, these vast and robust stores of information are encoded through song, story, dance, art and ceremony, rather than simply recorded in writing.

Weaving deeply personal storytelling with extensive research on mnemonics, Songlines: The Power and Promise offers unique insights into Indigenous traditional knowledges, how they apply today and how they could help all peoples thrive into the future. This book invites readers to understand a remarkable way for storing knowledge in memory by adapting song, art, and most importantly, Country, into their lives.
My Thoughts
For all non-indigenous Australians (and maybe for those Indigenous who have lost a link to their heritage and ancestry) this is definitely a book to read. The combination of the authors along with the anecdotes and examples opens your eyes to the power of the Australian Indigenous who have occupies this land for 60,000+ years.
This book provides a simplistic and easy to understand view of what is a very complex system of communication across many generations of Indigenous peoples and clans. I am so excited that there are 3 more books in this series to be produced. Personally, I will be purchasing every one of them. This has been an amazing way to start my journey into understanding more about the land custodians and how they see and align themselves to Country.

Picture
My Thoughts
This is a must read for anyone. And I mean that seriously. This is the only book in this collection that I would say is a must read. The other books below are great reads and definitely worth the purchase however, this book provides a sustainable, simple life style approach that is now proven over decades.
I had heard a lot about the power of cold showers and had already experienced the life changing value of breath work. This book brings them together through simplistic teachings and scientific evidence. I have been able to take my cold showers to a new level by adding in some basic breath work whilst in the shower prior to turning off the hot water. I can easily hit the 3 minute mark and could go for longer if necessary.
Wim Hof is an amazing human being who through this book is teaching us to how to experience life as a human and that we do not need to be extraordinary; in fact ordinary is just perfect.

The Wisdom of the Shamans

Don Jose Ruiz
For generation after generation, Toltec shamans have passed down their wisdom through teaching stories. The purpose of these stories is to implant a seed of knowledge in the mind of the listener, where it can ultimately sprout and blossom into a new and better way of life. The Wisdom of the Shamans: What the Ancient Masters Can Teach Us About Love and Life, Toltec shaman and master storyteller don Jose Ruiz shares some of the most popular stories from his family’s oral tradition and offers corresponding lessons that illustrate the larger ideas within each story. Ruiz begins by explaining that contrary to the stereotypical image of “witch doctor,” the ancient shamans were men and women who fulfilled several roles within their communities: philosopher, spiritual guide, medical doctor, psychologist, and friend. According to Ruiz, their teachings are not primitive or reserved for a chosen few initiates but are instead a powerful series of lessons on love and life that are available to us all. To that aim, he has included exercises, meditations, and shamanic rituals to help you experience the personal transformation these stories offer. The shamans taught that the truth you seek is inside of you. Let these stories, lessons, and tools be your guide to finding the innate wisdom that lives within.
My Thoughts
If you are interested in a combination of Shamanic practices, the history of how they came to fruition and the recollection of ancient stories then this is a must read. After indulging in the Toltec philosophy this was the perfect book to wrap it all up. I loved reading the ancient stories and how they are still as relevant to us today as they thousands of years ago.
This was a really enjoyable book and one that I will definitely read again even if the stories that are used to introduce each chapter.

The Three Questions

Don Miguel Ruiz and Barbara Emrys
From the author of the international bestseller The Four Agreements comes a profound guide which grounds itself further in the tradition of Toltec wisdom, helping us find and use the hidden power within us to achieve our fullest and most authentic lives. Delving deeper into Native American practice, Don Miguel Ruiz confronts us with three simple, yet utterly profound questions which are essential to explore at each stage of our lives:
  • Who am I?
  • What is real?
  • How do I express love?
Through these three eternal questions, Ruiz offers a practical framework to eventually lead us to our most complete and truest of selves. His transformative message provides the reader with a vehicle for overcoming stress, fear and anxiety, achieving peace of mind. This significant and empowering book reveals how our power is actually rooted in our identity, and it is only when this realisation hits that we will begin to be a benefit to ourselves and others.

A fascinating exploration on spirituality and human identity, The Three Questions is essential reading for those who are in pursuit of self-knowledge, understanding and acceptance.

My Thoughts
After reading the previous 4 books I found this one to be a little repetitive. Having said that however, this is still a great book to read and you could just purchase this and read it on its own as it does cover enough of the main topics covered in the Four and Fifth Agreement books. I am happy that I took time to add this into the collection as I now feel that through each of these books that I am now on a course of living purely in the present, unconditionally loving all and being able to look beyond the fictitious stories that we make up.

The Fifth Agreement

Don Miguel Ruiz and Don Jose Ruiz
In The Four Agreements, don Miguel Ruiz revealed how the process of our education, or “domestication,” can make us forget the wisdom we were born with. Throughout our lives, we make many agreements that go against ourselves and create needless suffering. The Four Agreements help us to break these self-limiting agreements and replace them with agreements that bring us personal freedom, happiness, and love.
In The Fifth Agreement, don Miguel Ruiz joins his son don Jose Ruiz to offer a fresh perspective on The Four Agreements and a powerful new agreement for transforming our lives into our personal heaven. The Fifth Agreement takes us to a deeper level of awareness of the power of the Self and returns us to the authenticity we were born with. In this compelling sequel to the book that has changed the lives of millions of people around the world, we are reminded of the greatest gift we can give ourselves: the freedom to be who we really are.
My Thoughts
On top of the Four Agreements, this added a new dimension and one that is very well timed given what 2020 has thrown up. It's all about questioning everything and anything which includes your own belief systems and opinions. Given that I have known to be quite opinionated then this message and agreement is very apt for me. I know think before reacting or providing comments. It's also a great reminder to learn how to listen and just enquire when others are talking as opposed to always interjecting your views, opinions and thoughts into the conversation. This agreement teaches us that silence can be a very powerful tool and learning to be in a position of not having to talk all the time can be very empowering.

The Mastery of Love

Don Miguel Ruiz
In the Toltec tradition, three fundamental masteries guide us to our true nature, which is happiness, freedom, and love.
The first is the Mastery of Awareness. This mastery teaches us to be aware of what we really are. It is the first step toward freedom, because we cannot be free if we don't know what we are, or what kind of freedom we are looking for. The Toltec said, 'Let us see ourselves with truth,' and they created a mastery just for awareness.
The second is the Mastery of Transformation, which teaches us how to become spiritual warriors, and stalk our actions and reactions so we can break free of the knowledge that enslaves us. This mastery shows us how to change the dream of our life by changing our agreements and beliefs.
The Mastery of Love is the result of the first two masteries. From the Toltec perspective, everything is made of love. Love is Life itself. When we master love, we align with the Spirit of Life passing through us. We are no longer the body, or the mind, or the soul, we are Love. Then every action we take is an expression of love, and love in action can only produce happiness.
When we master Awareness, Transformation, and Love, we reclaim our divinity and become one with God. This is the goal of the Toltec.
In the Mastery of Love, don Miguel Ruiz illuminates the fear-based beliefs and assumption that undermine love and lead to suffering and drama in relationships. Using insightful stories to bring his message to life, Ruiz shows us how to heal our emotional wounds, recover the freedom and joy that are our birthright, and restore the spirit of playfulness that is vital to loving relationships. The Mastery of Love includes-
Why 'domestication' and the 'image of perfection' lead to self-rejection The war of control that slowly destroys most relationships Why we hunt for love in others, and how to capture the love inside us How to finally accept and forgive ourselves and others 'Happiness can only come from inside of you and is the result of your love. When you are aware that no one else can make you happy, and that happiness is the result of your love, this becomes the greatest mastery of the Toltecs- the Mastery of Love.'
- from the book
Picture
My Thoughts
This book was the natural extension of the previous 2 books. Once you take on the new agreements with your life and understand the role of your inner dialogue, learning how to Master self love is the next step. This for me was another transformational read. Through this book I have further learned how to be kind and gentle with myself. This book also reconfirms a number of the other key messages that I have picked up from some of the previous books about learning how to find happiness internally and not through others. For me this is through the connection with nature and the energy forces that exist all around us. In reading through these books, I am able to sit quietly and comfortably in peace on my own just knowing that I am already complete and perfect as nature intended me to be.

The Voice of Knowledge

Don Miguel Ruiz
Before we learn to speak, our true nature is to love and be happy, to explore and enjoy life. As little children, we are completely authentic. Our actions are guided by instinct and emotions; we listen to the silent voice of our integrity. Once we learn a language, the people around us hook our attention and program us with knowledge. But that knowledge is contaminated with lies.
With our attention focused on all the knowledge in our head, we no longer perceive the world though the eyes of love; we only perceive what we have learned to believe. The voice of knowledge comes alive inside our head, and what is that voice telling us? Mostly lies. That voice never stops talking, judging, gossiping, and abusing us. It constantly sabotages our happiness and keeps us from enjoying a reality of truth and love.
Ruiz shows us how to recover the silent voice of our integrity and find inner peace. When the voice of knowledge no longer controls us, our life becomes an expression of our authentic self, just as it was before we learned to speak. Then we return to the truth, we return to love, and we live in happiness again.

In THE VOICE OF KNOWLEDGE, Miguel Ruiz reminds us of a profound and simple truth- The only way to end our emotional suffering and restore our joy in living is to stop believing in lies - mainly about ourselves. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, this breakthrough book shows us how to recover our faith in the truth and return to our own common sense.
Ruiz changes the way we perceive ourselves, and the way we perceive other people. Then he opens the door to a reality that we once perceived when we were one and two years old - a reality of truth, love, and joy.
My Thoughts
Post my reading the Four Agreements, I decided to embed myself into the the book series that aligns with the Toltec teachings. This takes the initial agreements and breaks them down even further with a particular focus on the role that our inner voice plays. Our inner voice can be our enemy, our judge and our executor or it can be our ally. For me, this book has enabled me to further understand the role that the inner dialogue has played in my life and how I can learn to manage it rather than the other way around. This is a good sequel to the initial teachings.

The Four Agreements

Don Miguel Ruiz
THE FOUR AGREEMENTS:
BE IMPECCABLE WITH YOUR WORD
Speak with integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.
DON'T TAKE ANYTHING PERSONALLY
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.
DON'T MAKE ASSUMPTIONS
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness, and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.
ALWAYS DO YOUR BEST
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are tired as opposed to well-rested. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.
In THE FOUR AGREEMENTS, Don Miguel Ruiz reveals the source of self-limiting beliefs that rob us of joy and create needless suffering. Based on ancient Toltec wisdom, The Four Agreements offer a powerful code of conduct that can rapidly transform our lives to a new experience of freedom, true happiness, and love.
Picture
My Thoughts
There is a lot of conjecture as to the authenticity of this work however, I am putting that aside as for me this is a very simple philosophy written in very simple terms. The Four Agreements are easy to understand, yet they are very hard to implement. I can guarantee you though, by even starting to implement these simple agreements how you refer to yourself and others will dramatically change.
I was somewhat aware of the internal dialogue that takes place within my head however, after reading this book and becoming more aware of that dialogue I am able to catch myself when I talk myself down or overly judge myself when I make any mistakes. This book has enabled me to continue to grow my self love, self belief and my self worth.
As you can see, I have read many books and there is a point in time where I feel you need to land on a philosophy that you truly align with and then focus on implementing that. For me, the Toltec wisdom is that philosophy and I am now on a path to learn more about it and start to actively make this philosophy a key part of my life moving forward.
From a different angle, in 2010 we visited the Teotihuacan Pyramids in Mexico and had an amazing experience learning all about that ancient culture. To now discover that the Toltec Wisdom was driven from that culture is no coincidence. Given that I do not believe in coincidences and believe that everything has it's devine path then I am convinced that my visit and these books were meant to be.

This book is a sales phenomenon, with each year outselling the prior for 16 years running! Includes a promotional code to gain exclusive online access to the new comprehensive love languages assessment.
My Thoughts
If you are in a relationship and are struggling to work out why at times you appear not to be fully connecting to your partner then the answer may just lay in this book. As the title indicates Gary Chapman identified 5 different love languages and no different to our verbal language, if we are using the wrong language or misinterpreting what someone else is saying then we will end up in miscommunication. This book enables each of us to understand our partners love language and in doing so we are then better able to communicate and ensure that both partners needs are met.
This has been a valuable book for myself and my wife as after many years of marriage and having numerous misunderstandings, we are now aware of each others needs and we can now ensure those needs are being met. By meeting those needs, both of us can feel fulfilled and therefore we have reduced the tension in our lives and in our marriage.
This is highly recommended for anyone in a relationship as this may be a game changer in how you communicate with each other.

The One Thing

Gary Keller
YOU WANT LESS: you want fewer distractions and less on your plate. The daily barrage of e-mails, texts, tweets, messages, and meetings distract you and stress you out. The simultaneous demands of work and family are taking a toll. And what's the cost? Second-rate work, missed deadlines, smaller pay cheques, fewer promotions - and lots of stress.
AND YOU WANT MORE: you want more productivity from your work. More income for a better lifestyle. You want more satisfaction from life, and more time for yourself, your family, and your friends.
Now you can have both less - and more!
In THE ONE THING, you'll learn to:

  • cut through the clutter
  • achieve better results in less time
  • build momentum toward your goal
  • dial down the stress
  • overcome that overwhelmed feeling
  • revive your energy
  • stay on track
  • master what matters to you
THE ONE THING is the New York Times bestseller which delivers extraordinary results in every area of your life - work, personal, family, and spiritual.
WHAT'S YOUR ONE THING?
My Thoughts
When I was starting up The Unearthed Man, I had a list of 5 - 6 initiatives that I wanted to get started on straight away. My coach pointed me to this book and we also discussed the importance to focus on One Thing. In the end of all the initiatives, my One Thing was The Unearthed Man Podcast. By having a clear focus point, I was able to go from being a Podcast listener to launching and producing my own Podcast. This One Thing has now led on to me being able to implement a number of the other initiatives. If I had tried to implement then all, I would still be part way through 5 - 6 items.
As per below, this book read in conjunction with Start with Why are the 2 key books for anyone who is looking to start something new and is not sure on where to start or how to move forward. This is also a great book if you are good at starting multiple things, yet finish very few.
Highly recommended.

Start with Why

Simon Sinek
Why are some people and organisations more inventive, pioneering and successful than others? And why are they able to repeat their success again and again?
In business, it doesn't matter what you do, it matters WHY you do it.
Start with Why analyses leaders like Martin Luther King Jr and Steve Jobs and discovers that they all think in the same way - they all started with why.
Simon Sinek explains the framework needed for businesses to move past knowing what they do to how they do it, and then to ask the more important question-WHY?
Why do we do what we do? Why do we exist? Learning to ask these questions can unlock the secret to inspirational business. Sinek explains what it truly takes to lead and inspire and how anyone can learn how to do it.

My Thoughts
As per the Man Uncivilized below, if you are looking to start up a new business, a new venture or even a new project/hobby then this is the go to book. It combines both business talk along with biological evidence as to why customers become loyal to certain companies and not to others. It is very simple: "Start with Why".
For me, when I started The Unearthed Man, this was the key go to book. It enabled me to focus on why I have set up this initiative and why it is important to me. Every time I feel that I am heading off path, then I remind myself of why I am doing this. If you always focus on the why, the how, who and when will take care of itself. This book combined with The One Thing in my humble opinion are the only 2 books you need to get started. The rest will sort itself out.

Man Uncivilized

Traver Boehm
The old paradigms of masculinity are outdated and broken. Both of them. And they're the root of all the dysfunction and pain men thrust into the world before turning it onto themselves. Both lead to the epidemic of unexpressed pain we see ripping through society.
Fortunately, a new paradigm has arisen. THE paradigm men are flocking to in droves — one that demands the cultivation of grounded strength, power checked with integrity, and introduction for men to their beautiful hearts.
Based upon an ETHOS to live by daily to guarantee men a healthy place in this world.
You get an entire section on how to cultivate sexual expression as a vehicle for growth, healing, and development for both men and their partners.
This is the key for men building the life men want to live, not the one a warped society demands of them without giving them a say in the matter.
Peace. Freedom. And community. The real answers to the suicide, addiction, and destructive patterns so many men are caught in. The patterns the people in their lives suffer from along with them.
Man UNcivilized is the bible of the UNcivilized movement and the go-to guide for men who are ready to shed their skin and exist in the world as leaders, protectors, and lovers.
My Thoughts
If you were to ask me: "Out of all the books that I have read and listed, which would you recommend if I was to only read 1 book?", then the answer is simple. Read this one. This is the best summation of what men need to learn about and start to implement into their lives. And for the women; the answer is the same. Buy your man this book and then read it yourself.
There are many great things about this book. The content to start with is direct and on point, the layout is like no other book and you do not have to read it from start to finish like other books. You can either flick to a chapter, a section, a page or even just a quote.
This is my most recommended book when it comes to making life changes as a man.

The Celestine Prophecy

James Redfield
A book that captures 'the spiritual moment'. Are three decades of interest in modern physics, ecology, mystical religion and interpersonal psychology finally synthesizing into a new spiritual 'common sense'? Are we now beginning to live this new common sense? Can it become the dominant paradigm of the next century? An ancient manuscript has been found in Peru. Its contents- nine insights the human race is predicted to grasp as we enter an era of true spiritual awareness. In this gripping adventure-tale, James Redfield offers a compelling vision of the new spiritual understanding that is emerging in human culture. You will instantly recognize the truth of the First Insight- in each of our lives occur mysterious coincidences-- sudden, unexplained events that, once interpreted correctly, serve to guide and direct our actions. Join the adventure and let this synchronistic perception guide you through a daring search for the remaining insights. Each will be found in turn, and each will clarify how a growing link with the spiritual is relentlessly transforming human life. Reading like a story of high adventure, but having the in-depth effect of a spiritual parable, The Celestine Prophecy will take you on a journey that will lighten your soul, and connect you with a vision and an experience that is already changing the world.
Picture
My Thoughts
This is a really good read as it beautifully combines principles on how we can live our lives entangled in a mystery/action/drama book.
The nine insights are easily understood with the most powerful ones for me relating to nothing being a coincidence, learning that all interactions relate to giving and receiving messages and the need to truly connect ourselves back into the single energy source that exists universally and cosmically. This was a great reminder for me to return to nature and not just to see it as trees, leaves and animals however as one complete body fully connected and working together.
This book was recommended to me after I verbalised my new found connection to my indoor plants and how I feel that we have a symbiotic relationship whereby I provide them love, water and sunshine and in return they provide me peace, happiness and oxygen.
If you are after an adventure book with a difference then I would certainly recommend this book.

The Way of the Superior Man

David Deida
David Deida explores the most important issues in men's lives ― from career and family to women and intimacy to love and spirituality ― to offer a practical guidebook for living a masculine life of integrity, authenticity, and freedom. This bestselling author and internationally renowned expert on sexual spirituality offers straightforward advice, empowering skills, body practices, and more to help readers realize a life of fulfillment, immediately and without compromise.
My Thoughts
Along the same lines as King Warrior Magician Lover, this book is a must read for anyone who is looking to either support men or to undertake "the work" to become a better man. This book comes from the angle of sexual energy and polarity and for all those men who may be struggling in their relationships then this will provide a deeper understanding as to why this may be taking place. I would also recommend this for women to read as this provides a great insight into how the male sexual energy works and will only go to strengthen your knowledge of how to better relate to your male partner.
This along with
King Warrior Magician Lover and Man Uncivilized have been the foundation books for understanding who I am and where I need to continue to uncover the deep conditioning and beliefs that I hold.
This book is highly recommended.

King Warrior Magician Lover

Robert Moore, D Gillette
Redefining age-old concepts of masculinity, Jungian analysts Robert Moore and Douglas Gillette make the argument that mature masculinity is not abusive or domineering, but generative, creative, and empowering of the self and others. Moore and Gillette clearly define the four mature male archetypes that stand out through myth and literature across history: the king (the energy of just and creative ordering), the warrior (the energy of aggressive but nonviolent action), the magician (the energy of initiation and transformation), and the lover (the energy that connects one to others and the world), as well as the four immature patterns that interfere with masculine potential (divine child, oedipal child, trickster and hero). King, Warrior, Magician, Lover is an exploratory journey that will help men and women reimagine and deepen their understanding of the masculine psyche.
Picture
My Thoughts
For anyone who is looking to understand more about masculine energy then this is a must read. The book outlines in a simplistic manner the challenges we face as adult males if we do not transition effectively from a boy to a man. It further solidifies the need for us to bring back rituals that enable boys to transition effectively into men.
It also provides how each of the energies have a shadow side and how and where they arise. Post reading this book, if you have self awareness you can see where you are still operating either as a boy or in your shadow self.
This book changed my outlook on how I see myself, where I still need to do the work and has enabled me to be more compassionate to others when I am able to identify them operating from either their child or shadow.
This book is highly recommended.

Shamanic Alchemy

James Endredy
A hands-on guide to advanced spiritual transformation through the combined sacred arts of alchemy and shamanism
  • Recasts the 7 stages of the alchemical “Great Work” as a transformative shamanic journey and initiatic experience
  • Provides step-by-step instructions for 18 shamanic alchemy practices for inner transformation, including vibrational energy work, consciousness-altering techniques, the creation of mirrors of the mind, and sacred ceremonies tied to the four elements
  • Explores the alchemical plant-medicine techniques of spagyrics, as well as recipes for basic tinctures and “plant-stones”
Offering a unique, hands-on guide to advanced self-transformation, James Endredy shows how traditional shamanic techniques offer a doorway into the sacred art of alchemy, the inner transformation of the soul.
Revealing the practical and intuitive connections between shamanism and alchemy, including not only Western alchemy but also alchemical practices from the East, Endredy recasts the 7 stages of the alchemical “Great Work” as a transformative shamanic journey and initiatic experience. He provides step-by-step instructions for 18 shamanic alchemy practices for inner transformation, including vibrational energy work, consciousness-altering techniques, the creation of mirrors of the mind, shamanic viewing, and sacred ceremonies tied to the four elements. Exploring the healing art of spagyrics, the author shows how this alchemical plant-medicine practice is receptive to the energetic work of traditional shamanic techniques. He details formulations for distilling shamanic spagyric remedies, as well as recipes for basic tinctures and “plant-stones.” He also discusses the creation of sacred space, altars, and shamanic distillation lodges.
Comparing shamanic and alchemical cosmologies, the author explains how both shamanism and alchemy employ direct experience of the numinous and invisible worlds, also known as gnosis, to impart wisdom, invoke peace of mind, and increase creativity and vitality. Showing how the practical vibrational science of alchemy and the consciousness-transforming techniques of shamanism directly enhance and expand upon each other, Endredy also reveals how they have the same ultimate goals: to allow the practitioner to transmute spiritual lead into gold and to penetrate the deep secrets of life and of nature.

My Thoughts

For anyone who has an interest in both alchemy and shamanism then this is a great book. Personally I took less away from the practical alchemy components and more away from the application of the shamanic practices.
I liked this book as it extended my reading as I would not normally read this style of text.
This will definitely be a good reference book to look back on as I move forward over the years.

The Courage to be Happy

Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga
The sequel to the mega-selling international phenomenon, The Courage to be Disliked. This book is a compass.
Navigate and discover along your path the courage to be happy.
The Courage to be Happy presents profound insights into living life courageously and finding happiness along the way.
As in The Courage to be Disliked, we follow a Socratic dialogue between a philosopher and a young man. The philosopher believes that the key to a life of happiness and fulfilment is offered to us by the theories of Alfred Adler, a forgotten giant of 19th century psychology who has long been overshadowed by his two contemporaries, Freud and Jung. The young man is full of doubt that life can be genuinely improved by simply changing his thinking. Patiently, the philosopher explains the essence of Adler's 'psychology of courage', taking the young man through the mental steps necessary to achieve it, and demonstrating to the young man and to us the changes this psychology will bring to the way we live our lives.
This is a work that is truly life-changing in its power and universally applicable in its scope.

My Thoughts

In a similar vein to the prequel at times this can be a little hard to read however, by reading the prequel it was a little simpler to follow along.
This book takes the concepts of the prequel and places more practical examples around the areas of separation of tasks. it also delves further into the conditioning that we have a children and provides further insights into this area.
I would also recommend this book if you have an interest in psychology and have more of an academic approach to self healing and self knowledge and it is a definite must read if you have read the prequel. It somewhat ties the complete story together.

The Courage to be Disliked

Ichiro Kishimi and Fumitake Koga
The Courage to be Disliked demonstrates how to unlock the power within yourself to be the person you truly want to be.
Using the theories of Alfred Adler, one of the three giants of 19th century psychology alongside Freud and Jung, it follows an illuminating conversation between a philosopher and a young man. The philosopher explains to his pupil how each of us is able to determine our own lives, free of the shackles of past experiences, doubts and the expectations of others. It's a way of thinking that's deeply liberating, allowing us to develop the courage to change, and to ignore the limitations that we and those around us can place on ourselves.
The result is a book that is both highly accessible and profound in its importance. Millions have already read and benefited from its wisdom. Now that The Courage to be Disliked has been published for the first time in English, so can you.
Picture

My Thoughts

This book can be challenging to read and keep up with the conversation between the philosopher and the young man. Having said that, it opened me up to an area of psychology that I was not aware of and have now become fascinated in. I have found that it is a great compliment to the other books that I have either read or am reading.
It has a large focus on how we can use the past as an excuse for our current behaviours, attitudes and bias and that we always have the choice on whether we allow our past to determine us or if we have the courage to move forward and forge a new us. All my previous knowledge in this area focussed on how our past traumas and conditioning results in who we are today. This book flips that on its head. It is all based on having the courage to move beyond our past, let it all go and determine a new now and future.
I would also recommend this book if you have an interest in psychology and have more of an academic approach to self healing and self knowledge.
PS: my apologies to the authors and the original psychologist Alfred Adler as I have completely simplified the contents of the book.

My Thoughts

This is another very easy read and provides messages in an extremely simplistic manner.

Silence

Thich Nhat Hanh
We can spend a lot of time looking for happiness when the world right around us is full of wonder. But our hearts and minds are so full of noise that we can’t always hear the call of life and love. To hear that call and respond to it, we need silence.
In his beautiful new book, Buddhist monk and Nobel Peace Prize nominee Thich Nhat Hanh explains how mindfulness is the practice that stops the noise inside. With gentle anecdotes, simple Buddhist wisdom and practical exercises, he shows us how to live mindfully so that all the internal chatter ceases and we are left with the eloquent sound of silence. Now, at last, we can answer the call of the beauty around us. Through silence, Thich Nhat Hanh reveals, we are free to hear, to see - and just be.
Picture

My Thoughts

I have really enjoyed this book as it is very simple in its explanation of what silence is and can be. There are a number of practices that can be put into place immediately along with some very powerful mantra's that can be used dependent on what thoughts are going through your mind at any given time.
It also explains how we can find a place of silence in a busy, chaotic world. For all of us who live in a busy world (most of which is self driven), this is super important as there are techniques to find space and silence which will fault in better decision making with family and work colleagues.
A big recommendation to read this book.
